Getting pictures from your Android phone to your PC can be a daunting task if you don’t know where to start. Fortunately, it’s pretty straightforward once you know where to look.

We like to take photos with our mobile phone, which is a good way to record the memorable moment in daily life. Since those photos are precious, you tend to transfer them to PC as backup, store them safely for future viewing.

They say the best camera is the one you have with you, and more often than not that camera is the one built into your smartphone. If you end up shooting a lot of pictures or videos with your phone, you’ll undoubtedly want to get those pictures onto your PC at some point.

There’s no shortage of ways to automatically back up your images to the cloud (and then move them from the cloud to your PC), but that’s not what we’re talking about here. Instead, we’re going to look at how to get pictures from your phone to your computer via a simple, old school USB transfer.

Regardless of which method you choose below, you’ll need to make sure your phone is ready to transfer pictures. Go ahead and connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. Then, pull down the notification shade and make sure the option to transfer images is selected. The option may actually be named “Transfer images,” but it could also be named “MTP,” “PTP,” or even just “File transfer.” They all basically do the same thing.

Method One: Use Microsoft Photos

If you’re into letting software do the majority of the work for you, Microsoft Photos is probably the easiest way to go about getting pictures from your phone to your computer. Photos is probably already installed on your PC and is super easy to use. And if it’s not on your PC, you can get it for free from the Microsoft Store (the one on your computer, not to be confused with the otherMicrosoft Store).

With your phone plugged into your computer and in the correct mode (as highlighted above), click the “Import” button in the upper right corner of Photos.

On the menu that pops up, select the “From a USB device” option.

Photos should scan for USB devices, and then load a list. Select your phone.

After you select a device, Photos immediately starts looking for images stored on the phone. This could take a bit of time, so just let it do its thing.

When the photos list loads up, go through and click on all the photos you’d like to import. If you know you want them all, just use the “Select All” link at the top. You can also hit the “Select New” link to select only images that are new since your last import session (i.e., those that Photos has not transferred before). Obviously, if you’ve never used this feature before, all your photos will be new and those two options will do the same thing.

By default, Photos creates a new folder named according to the year and month when the pictures were taken, and places that new folder in the Pictures folder on your PC. So, if this is the first time you’ve used Photos to import pictures, be ready for it to create several new folders. It’s not an ideal organization, but it beats having everything dumped into a single folder.

You can, however, change this organization. Just click the “Change how they’re organized” link at the bottom. From here, you can choose a new folder if you’d like, as well as a different sorting option. For more granular organization, you can choose date (which will end up creating a lot of different folders), or you organize them by year to minimize the number of new folders.

With your images and organization options selected, tap the “Import Selected” button at the bottom. Poof—like magic, the photos are imported to your computer.

Couldn’t be easier.

Method Two: Manually Copy/Paste Images in Explorer

If you prefer to have as much control as possible over how your photos are organized, you’ll want to import everything manually.

To do this, once again make sure your phone is in the correct mode and ready to transfer images. From there, open Windows Explorer and head to “This PC.”

Your phone should be listed as a device. Depending on how the USB transfer option is set, the icon may look like a camera, a portable media player, or maybe even another drive. The icon isn’t that important, though—just pay attention to the name.

Once you open the device, you’ll see a drive named “Phone.” Open that.

To find the images, look for the DCIM folder.

In the DCIM folder, open the “Camera” folder.

Select all the images you’d like to transfer. Just as in other Windows folders, you can select a range of photos by clicking the first photo you want, and then Shift+clicking the last photo in the range. Or, you can select multiple photos one at a time by Ctrl+clicking them.

After selecting your photos, right click on one of the selected images, and then select the “Copy” command (you can also just hit Ctrl+C). If you’d like to move photos instead of copying them (which removes them from the phone), use the “Cut” command instead.

Navigate to the folder where you’d like the pictures to go, right click any empty space in the folder, and then choose the “Paste” command (or hit Ctrl+V).

After a few seconds (or minutes, depending on how many images you’re transferring) all the pictures should be in their new home. And of course, if you prefer dragging and dropping rather than copying and pasting, you could can also open a couple of File Explorer windows and just drag the photos the way you would any other files.

1. Download iPhone Photos from iCloud to PC or Mac

We know that we can sync our iPhone photos remotely among Apple devices with iCloud Photos, a.k.a. iCloud Photo Library enabled, and now this feature also saves a lot of space on iPhone by “Optimize iPhone Storage”. If your iPhone doesn’t have enough space for you to download all photos and move to the computer, you can choose to download them directly from iCloud to your PC or Mac. But before we get started, please make sure you have enabled iCloud Photos. On your iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. If iCloud Photos (iCloud Photos Library in iOS 11 or later) is turned off, switch it on.

There are two ways to download photos from iCloud: one is going to iCloud.com and sign in your iCloud, then download photos one by one from iCloud > Photos; the other one is to install iCloud software on computer, which is convenient for downloading all photos and videos in one click, and you just need the following steps.

Using iCloud on Windows 10/8/7 PC:

Install iCloud for Windows on your computer and sign in with Apple ID.
Check the small box next to the Photos, and click on the Options button.
Tick the iCloud Photo Library option, and Download new photos and videos to my PC. You can also select Upload new photos and videos from my PC if you need it.
Click the Done button and then Apply.
Open iCloud Photos in File Explorer a.k.a. Windows Explorer in Windows 7, and click on Download Photos and Videos on the top left.
Check the All photos or choose the years respectively. Then click on the Download button.
Double-click the Downloads folder to view your iCloud photos.

Using iCloud App on Mac:

Step 1: Open the Photos app on Mac and click Photos in the menu bar to enter Preferences.
Step 2: Click on iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID and password. Make sure iCloud Photo Library and Download Originals to this Mac are selected.
Step 3: Go back to the Photos tab and select the photos you need. (Or Command + A to select all photos)
Step 4: Click on File > Export on the menu bar to “Export Selected items…” or “Export Unmodified Original For Selected items…” accordingly, and then click Export to start downloading photos to your mac.

2. Transfer Photos from iPhone to Mac or Windows 10 with Photos App

For Mac users, it’s well known that you can directly import photos via the Photos app on Mac. Similarly, now, Windows 10 users also have a Photos app to import photos from iPhone quickly.

Copy iPhone Photos to Mac using the Photos App:

Note: Make sure you have the latest iTunes installed on your Mac.

Connect your iPhone to the Mac and the macOS Photos app will open automatically.
Click on the Import tab at the top or the device’s name on the sidebar.
Select the photos you need and click on Import Selected to get photos off iPhone. If you want all new photos, click on Import All New Photos.

3. Copy Photos from iPhone to PC/Mac via Gihosoft iPhone Data Recovery

4. Transfer Photos from iPhone to Windows PC through File Explorer

Transferring photos through File Explorer, also known as Windows Explorer, is another convenient and efficient way to import your iPhone photos to your PC of Windows 10/8/7.

5. Transfer iPhone Photos via Windows AutoPlay

If you are using a PC with Windows 7, when you connect your iPhone to it, generally you will see the AutoPlay window popping up on the screen. It’s the easiest way to transfer iPhone photos to your PC.

Click on the AutoPlay “Import pictures and videos”.
A small window will then appear on the bottom right to estimate the total of your photos. Optionally you can tag these pictures, and then click Import to get all images to PC.

Alternatively, you can click “Open device to view files” on AutoPlay and go Computer > your iPhone > Internal Storage > DCIM to get your all photos.

If you accidentally close the AutoPlay prompt or don’t see it, you can directly open the Windows Explorer > My Computer > iPhone disk under Portable Device, and click into it.

6. Import Photos from iPhone to Mac using Airdrop

To transfer photos between iOS devices and Mac, using Airdrop is a good choice. It requires no connection between your iOS devices and Mac via a USB cable. But it is only suitable for one or several pictures. If you have hundreds or even thousands of photos, it is not an ideal method.

Step 1: Switch on Airdrop on your iPhone

Go to Settings > General > Airdrop.
Tap on the Everyone bar or the Contacts only bar.

Step2: Switch on Airdrop on Mac

Head to Finder > Go > Airdrop.
Click on “Allow me to be discovered by:” and choose Contacts Only or Everyone.

Step 3: Start to import iPhone photos

Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
Tap on the Select in the top right corner, and tick the pictures you want to import.
Click on the share icon at the bottom left, wait until you see the name of your Mac, and flip it.
Click the Accept when a window pops up on your Mac.
